Many Preppers Will Starve
It brings me no pleasure to say this, but the sheeple won’t be the only ones looking lean in SHTF. I think it’s safe to say that the majority of preppers are vastly underestimating how much food they will need post-collapse. We’re just not used to thinking about food in a world where every calorie counts. Don’t worry though, there’s an easy way to calculate out exactly how much food your family will need to survive.
The Wrong Way
If you’re going by the, “recommended serving size” on the back of package to estimate how much food you have stored, you’ll be going on the TEOTWAWKI Diet.
That’s because the recommended serving size is determined by the food manufacturer, who will try to “optimize” the serving size to seem like the consumer is getting more for their money.
The right way
What you really need to focus on is how many calories you’ll consume on a daily basis. This will ensure you can maintain your energy levels during the stressful, high-activity periods of SHTF.
To figure out your caloric needs, first, you calculate what’s called your Basal metabolic rate (BRM). Your BMR is basically:
The rate at which your body burns calories when at rest.
The BMR is a calculation based on your weight, height, age and sex that will tell you the minimum calories you need each day stay alive.
Chances are you’re going to be doing more just than resting. So you should also factor in your activity level using the Harris-Benedict Equation which will give you an accurate calorie count for a busy day defending the retreat.
25,395 cans of tuna!
Take a look a prepper group of 6 people: 2 men, 2 women, 1 teen and 1 baby. Just that small group needs almost 5,000,000 calories a year; that’s 25,395 cans of tuna! I doubt they want to all eat tuna 3x a day, but you get the idea; it’s a lot of food.
We started keeping track of our families calorie requirements and food inventory in spreadsheets, but as the spreadsheets grew, it became a bit of a nightmare. We decided to build online tools, like the SHTF Calorie Calculator to help us manage things easier. In the spirit of community, we’re making these tools available for free to any prepper that would like to use them.

The dirty little secret of 1 year food supplies
Bulk manufactures of long-term store food supplies don’t want you to know that on average their, “Year Long Food Supply” contains just 60% of most people’s daily calorie needs.
It gets even worse when you take out the calorie dense chocolate desserts and peanut butter snacks.

Do it the right way
Don’t make the mistake of guessing that you have enough food stored up to feed your family. Take the time to calculate exactly how much they need to survive.
